About The CIE Lab
CIE Teaching and Learning Lab is a community of praxis for AP Literature teachers. We help schools and teachers of advanced learners develop a literary praxis; design intentionally aligned lessons and units, and create community classrooms that are conducive to positive student outcomes.
We believe that personhood grounds pedagogy, curriculum must be intentional, and community is methodology.
Culturally Intentional Education
Culturally Intentional Education (CIE) is an interdisciplinary framework for literary instruction within AP Literature classrooms. It is grounded on three tenets:
Know Thyself: Culturally Intentional Teacher Education allows for teachers to examine themselves as gifted English practitioners in a community of praxis.
Make Meaning: A Culturally Intentional Curriculum is designed in alignment with the AP Literature framework. The curriculum includes critical, creative, and cultural literacies alongside research - based reading and writing methodologies.
Make Space: Culturally Intentional Classrooms are a space for literary engagement through critical and creative dialogue for the purpose of strengthening verbal communication and community - making.

Our mission is to transform how AP Literature teachers teach literature by designing classrooms where culture, creativity, and critical thinking are inseparable. We equip AP Literature teachers with the tools and frameworks to develop a Culturally Intentional and impactful literary praxis.
We envision AP Literature classrooms as spaces where advanced literary study is grounded in intellectual curiosity. Through CI Pedagogy we’re changing the experience of literature for students and teachers alike.
